Harley Sportster Saddlebags: Get Yourself One of These and Fix It Up

Not too long ago I decided to add some style to my Harley Sportster bike. I decided to look for luggage carrier which was strong, safe, and affordable. When I stumbled upon, the then just launched, VikingSaddlebags for Harley Sportster, I was doubtful to say the least. After using it for a few months, I can now say, I definitely am a believer now. As soon as I got the bags, I noticed immediately how well built they were. They have a very strong back and the front is made of very flexible yet tough leather. I know what you are thinking, so I’ll stop heaping praise on these saddlebags and get right to the point. To truly understand the value of these bags you need to install them properly and that’s where I come in. In this article I’ll guide you through the installation process.

Stage I

First things first, get the bags out of the box and review the free hardware that comes with the Saddlebags for Sportster. The Hardware package should contain the following items: mounts (4), cross members, two sets of nuts, quarter inch hex head barrel bolt, assembly (4), cross member fender washers (4), and fender washers (8). Hold the bag in several positions so that you can determine the desired position of the bag on your bike. Once you find the right position press the back of the back against the bolts on the fender strut. Use a marker to mark the contact point of the fender strut bolts and the back. Place the longer end of the upright on the marked spots in order to determine the placement of the lower two holes and the cross member. Use a power drill to punch four holes at the back of the saddlebag.

Stage II

Now to permanently fix Harley bags to the bike, you need to first attach the mount then place the bag onto the bike tighten the nuts using a flat-head screwdriver. Repeat the same process in order to install the other saddlebag. Remember, in order to ensure both bag’s fitment is identical and to save time, after drilling the four holes in the first bag place the back of the bag against the second UN-drilled one. Now access the drilled bag from the inside and mark the four holes in the second bag.
