What is the Dakar Rally Race?
The Dakar Rally Race is a special automobile event that spans regions of Southern Europe and Africa, lasting between 10 to 15 days. Traveling across both on- and off-road trails, the participants must cover a certain amount of distance each day, gradually working towards the finish line. The entire length of the Dakar Rally Race route spans several thousand kilometers; however, the segments of the Dakar Rally Race route are never the same every year.
To ensure that no participant can preplan or has an advantage over the other competitors, the exact details of the entire route are kept secret, known only to the organizers. Only at the start of each day will the racers be provided with the route and destination. Each racer will have to rely on his/her own means of navigation to get to the end of each segment of the Dakar Rally Race.
Depending on which each racer finished in the previous section, this will determine the starting placement of the racers each time the race resumes. This starting placement of the racers may also be affected by any penalties imposed due to withdrawal, poorly maintained equipment, and violation of the rules. When navigating the Dakar Rally Race route, only competitors can provide maintenance and work with other racers. Any outside assistance, whether support vehicles or repair crews, is prohibited from interfering. The winner of the race is the first person to cross the finish line in Dakar Senegal. In the event of a tie, the winner is the person who managed to finish the entire route in the least amount of time.
