Currently, Harley-Davidson is going through its toughest phase, and it is not expected to end any sooner. The American motorcycle manufacturer is in a declining phase, and it is quite evident.
The American motorcycle brand knows how to deal with difficulties well. However, it seems that this time it will not find a solution for a long time.
1. Critique from Media and Industry Experts
On the one hand, the media and motorcyclists continue to criticize the company for its conservative production and branding. On the other hand, competitors seem to be moving much faster in the field of innovation. It may be too by the time the company finds what it needs.
2. The Need for Change
The fact is, the only way Harley can save its reputation is to move towards younger clients. Motorcycle lovers want more innovation now.
It is not correct to say that Harley did not listen to what its fanbase was interested in. The company’s efforts are in the right direction. However, clearly, they are not enough. Technology moves faster, and you may not find time to figure out what went wrong.
Harley-Davidson’s strategies to cope with the downfall have been failing for more than a decade now. Sales fall every year, and nothing seems to work.
The aging client is getting old and young riders are not willing to spend several thousands of dollars on a traditional and time-restrained Harley.
Moreover, Jochen Zeitz, CEO of Harley-Davidson, admits that H-D has to do a lot of work and needs to do things right to keep the company up and make it better. What is also pretty bad is that it is not only Harley-Davidson that is struggling; cruisers’ sales are also falling in the region, and they are a significant part of what Harley offers.
3. Bad News for Harley Fans
There is bad news for those who were waiting for Harley to bring a game-changer to the 2024 EICMA show. The company, unfortunately, does not have anything more than new paint jobs and other aesthetic upgrades. This is heartbreaking for all the Harley and motorcycling fans. People want to see new, aggressive Harleys, and they want a modern piece of machinery. Everybody wants to see new Harleys that are built purely for performance and not only for comfort or bulkiness.
There are no new Harleys at EICMA 2024. The factory’s lack of interest is understandable, as they are probably out of ideas.
4. The Last Success Fans Can Cherish
The H-D Pan America 1250 was the last thing that came out of the factory and did well in terms of sales. The bike is relatively new for the company, and it neither looks nor performs like a traditional Harley. The Pan America is the first Harley-Davidson product of its kind, and it is an ADV touring bike. Additionally, it performs differently too. The bike is quite different from the cruisers and tourers that the company produces. The Pan America looks unique, and it seems to perform exceptionally in terms of acceleration, agility, and cornering than any other Harley.
5. The H-D Livewire Is Still a Flop
The pretty expensive electric motorcycle produced by Harley-Davidson is the LiveWire. LiveWire is continuously losing sales. Young riders are not interested, and it seems that no one finds it suitable primarily because of the high prices. High prices apart, LiveWire is also facing stiff competition from well-known competitors.
6. EICMA
EICMA is one of the biggest motorcycling events, taking place once a year in Milan, Italy. Under one roof, motorcycle manufacturers from across the world bring their newest or recently developed motorcycles to show to the public. It is a great event that undoubtedly offers a great marketing avenue for massive and struggling motorcycle manufacturers to show their best engineering efforts.
6.1 EICMA: A Great Platform
EICMA is a platform for all motorcycle brands to show what is new and upcoming in their lineups. It is also an opportunity for a motorcycle manufacturer like Harley-Davidson to introduce something that can get people excited about the company’s future and its products.
6.2 EICMA: Technological Advancements and Innovations
EICMA is the platform where a motorcycle manufacturer can try to be the biggest technological and innovative force among all motorcycle manufacturers. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like Harley-Davidson bothered much this year. It does not seem like its engineers did anything this year to prepare it for the technological revolution
Other massive competitors such as KTM, Ducati, and Honda are expected to steal the show with their new and innovative motorcycles.
7. All Eyes on Harley-Davidson
In the case of Harley-Davidson, the whole world is waiting for a miracle. Everybody wants their favorite American motorcycle brand to revive. It is still the most loved U.S. motorcycle brand and has a lot of potential. At the same time, the whole world wants to know what Harley-Davidson’s plan is for future riders.
